NILES - Marcella J. "Marcie" Holmes Cavanaugh, 85, passed away at 10:15 am on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the Humility House in Austintown following a long illness.
She was born in Youngstown on February 26, 1929 the daughter of Luke F. and Isabelle (Fitzgerald) Finn.
She was a 1947 graduate of Ursuline High School, a 1971 graduate of Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Education Degree and in 1980 she obtained a Master's Degree in Curriculum. She taught fourth, fifth and sixth grades at Jefferson, Washington and Jackson schools in Niles for over 24 years and retired in 1994.
She was a member of St. Stephen Church where she was a lector and the Niles Catholic Womens Club where she held the office of secretary. Marcie was instrumental in developing the St. Stephen School Library. She was a life member of Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Trumbull County Retired Teachers, Niles Scope, Niles Historical Society and was an avid Cleveland Indians Fan.
Marcie is survived by her husband, Thomas D. Cavanaugh whom she married on August 7, 1982; son, Michael Holmes of Niles; three daughters, Charlene (William) Rabel of Mineral Ridge, Karen (Michael) Schimley of Niles, Joyce (Russell) Clay of Niles; three step-daughters, Kathleen (John) Lamantia of Anchorage, Alaska, Kelly (Jerry) Wildes of Lowellville, Cheryl (James) Fee of Porta Guda, Florida; 14 grandchildren, Billy Rabel, Brian Rabel, Katie Schimley, Kyle Schimley, Thomas Clay, Tricia Clay, Erin Clay, Michael Holmes, Lisa Holmes, John Lamantia, Casey Englebaugh, Anthony Genovese, Jacqueline Lucas, Katlyn Genovese; 6 great grandchildren; two brothers, John L. Finn of Austintown, William J. Finn of Farmington Hills, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Alfred Holmes whom she married on September 16, 1950 and who died on March 5, 1975 and a brother Donald Finn.
Calling Hours will be Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 5 to 8 pm at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 19, 2014 at 10:00 am at St. Stephen Church. Rev. John Jerek will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
