Mary Steib Obituary

NILES - Mary Steib, passed away peacefully at her home in the early hours of Friday, August 11, 2017.

She was born on May 27, 1921 in Neffs, Ohio the youngest child of Tekla and Nicholas Buch. On Decoration Day, May 30, 1927 the family moved to Warren and she resided in the Warren Niles area the remainder of her life.

Mary graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1938. In the 1940's she was employed at the General Electric Company Ohio Lamp plant. In the late 1960's she started working as a part time switch board operator at the former Warren Griswold's Department Store and eventually became the personnel manager at the Strouss and Kaufmanns Department Store in the Eastwood Mall.

For many years she was a member of the Yankee Run ladies golf league but probably enjoyed having lunch as much as golfing.

Music was a lifelong passion for Mary. She was an accomplished accordionist and early on, with her brother Pete, entertained at dances. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, choir member for over 60 years. Mary was a member of the Ida McKinley Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star where she had been the longtime choir director. She was especially proud of being a member of the Niles Bicentenial Chorus.

She enjoyed playing bridge at the Howland Scope Center and participated in numerous activities at the Niles Scope Center, but lately gave up square dancing. She also was a member of the Rebecca Circle, Niles Historical Society and Friends of the McKinley Memorial Library.

On November 1, 1941, Mary married Russell H. Steib and they shared 61 years of marriage before his death on September 13, 2003. Together they especially enjoyed car trips to Florida, North Carolina and California.

Mary's surviving family is a son Russ "Rusty" Steib who lived with her, godson Tim (Liz) Burnich, nephews Steve (Linda) Buch, John Buch, Janet Buch (spouse of Denny) and all their children.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, twin brothers Pete (Ann) Buch and Steve (Mary) Buch and sister Anna (James) Steib and nephew Denny Buch.

Words do not convey the exuberance Mary brought to life, as a child she started school at age five because her Mother could not keep her away from school and a 96 years she was still on the go. She will be sadly missed.

Calling hours will be from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, Monday, August 14, 2017 at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11:00am, Tuesday, August 15, 2017 with visitation one hour before the services. Rev. Paula Marbury will officiate. Burial at Crown Hill Cemetery will be private.

In memory of Mary, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church choir fund, 608 N. Crandon Ave, Niles, O. 44446.
