Alberta Ellwood Obituary
NILES - Alberta Martha "Bert" Ellwood, 81, passed away unexpectedly at 12:30 pm on Sunday June 1, 2014 at the Lake Vista Rehabilitation Center in Cortland.
She was born in Ravenna on August 5, 1932 the daughter of Gus and Lina (Harris) DeYoung. She grew up on the family farm and graduated in 1950 from Ravenna Township High School.
Bert was a longtime member of St. Stephen Church, where she was the Reachout Committee Coordinator, Eucharistic Minister and regularly recited the rosary at Shepherd of the Valley and Autumn Hills Nursing Homes. For her service to home bound parishioners she received the Camillus Award. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Leader and served on the Catholic Committee on Scouting. For her many years of service to the Boy Scouts of America she received the Silver Beaver Award, Wood Badge Award, District Award of Merit and the Catholic Scouter of the Year in 2000. She also was a member of the Good Earth Garden Club and enjoyed bowling, flower gardening and reading. She attended Niles McKinley High School Football games for over 50 years and was a fan of Notre Dame Football and the Minnesota Vikings.
Alberta is survived by four sons, Kenneth P. (Marci) Ellwood Sr. of Niles, Shawn T. Ellwood Sr. of Niles, Patrick B. (Becky) Ellwood of Liberty, Robert C. (Christine) Ellwood of Asheboro, North Carolina; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth (Mike) Coburn, Heather (Marc) Means, Kenneth Ellwood Jr., Ashley Ellwood, Allison Ellwood, Shawn Ellwood Jr., Brennan Ellwood, Nolan Ellwood, Aleena Ellwood; three great grandchildren, Ethan, Kyle, Abigale; three brothers, Kenneth (Judy) DeYoung of Mantua, Jack (Wanda) DeYoung of Weeki Wachee, Florida, Garry DeYoung of Windham.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert Thomas Ellwood whom she married on December 15, 1956 and who died on September 6, 2009; son Dennis M. Ellwood who died on May 19, 2007.
Calling hours will be Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 6 to 8 pm at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, June 6, 2014 at 12:30 pm at St. Stephen Church. Rev. Thomas Kraszewski will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Cemetery.
