Dorothy Danes Obituary

WARREN -- Dorothy Timko Danes, 87, passed away peacefully at 9:14 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, at St. Elizabeth's Health Center in Youngstown, Ohio, following a courageous six-week illness.
Dorothy was born on September 22, 1926 in Pittsburgh, the daughter of first-generation Ukrainian-Americans George and Johanna Timko. Known to friends and family as "Dot" and "Dor," she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She was a joyful and loyal friend, and she possessed a fierce sense of independence and incredible sense of style.
Like her beloved husband and Timko brothers, Dorothy was an avid sports fan. She loved the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Kent State Golden Flashes. Dorothy regularly called into Bruce Drennan's "SportsTime Ohio" show, where she offered listeners "advice" on the Browns' coaching staff. She also loved playing the slots at area casinos like Mountaineer and The Meadows.
Dorothy was a political junkie. She volunteered for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, and prided herself on being the first on her street to have an "Elect Obama" yard sign. A member of the League of Women Voters of Greater Youngstown, in the weeks before her death she was gearing up to volunteer for Hillary Clinton.
In her 86th year of life, Dorothy began volunteering at St. Joseph's Health Center in Warren and joined "Silver Sneakers" at her local gym. She was always learning, making new friends and having new adventures.
Dorothy was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Niles, Ohio. A 1944 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, Dorothy worked at local grocery stores like Kroger and A&P. Later in life, she worked at McKinley Federal Savings & Loan and for Dr. George Mokris.
She married Arnold A. Danes on Valentine's Day 1953 and together they worked hard to provide a good life for their three children. Arnold preceded her in death in May 2012. Dorothy will be forever missed and joyously remembered by her daughters, Karen Danes (Jay Hoar) of Buena Vista, Pa; Stephanie Danes (Bill) Smith of Howland and George (Lynn) Danes of Howland; a brother, Nicholas (Ann) Timko of Califonia; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by brothers John, Frank, and Mike Timko and sister Katherine Timko Wiery.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, at St. Stephen Church in Niles.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations in Dorothy's memory to the St. Joseph Health Center Mission Fund, 667 Eastland Avenue, Warren, Ohio 44484.
