Leah Paugh Obituary

WARREN - Leah Jean Mathews Paugh, 92, the daughter of William and Mary (Gilbert) Mathews died Wednesday night June 18, 2014 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
Leah Jean Mathews was born August 22, 1921 in Princeton County, Pennsylvania, near New Castle. Her parents met in New Castle where her father worked for the railroad. Later the couple moved their family to Champion, Ohio where Leah grew up. She graduated in 1939. She met James Paugh through a friend and married him October 4, 1941. Shortly thereafter, Jim was inducted into the Army Air Corps. He served in London, England, for most of his term, repairing airplanes. Meanwhile, Leah continued working in Warren where she purchased the family's first home.
Leah's work career included Gorog's Market, Kerr's Market, Sunlight (Packard Electric), Rappolds Co. In addition, she enjoyed the years she spent as a Trumbull County Board of Elections poll worker. Her last work venture was a dream-come-true. Leah owned and operated her own shop featuring collectible dolls and bears. She named it Leah's Treasure Chest.
Leah has always been a people person. Her life centered upon interacting with people, especially family and friends. She maintained close relationships throughout her life. Her door was always open!
Church meant a great deal to Leah. She joined Tod Avenue United Methodist Church in 1943. She and Jim were both active members. Leah was involved with Methodist Youth, the Bazaar, fund raisers and the monthly fish fry. Leah was active in the Trinity Sunday School Class that became the Trinity Women's Group until it dissolved.
In 1951, Leah joined the CCL (Children Conservation League). When her chapter was officially dissolved, a remnant of her group continued to meet for monthly dinners that spanned over fifty years. About fifteen years ago, Leah was instrumental in organizing a class reunion for the 1939 Champion graduates. The reunions continued until 2011.
Over the years, Leah has kept active with varying interests. Among them have been knitting, ceramics, quilting and refinishing furniture. She has been an avid sports enthusiast with NASCAR, Cleveland Indians baseball and Pittsburgh Steelers football. In later years, she has enjoyed programing on the Home and Garden Network and walking at the Eastwood Mall. Leah has always loved to shop! Her magnet "Born to Shop" says it all. Leah will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Leah is survived by a son, Craig (Ruth) Paugh of Warren; three granddaughters, Gretta (Chris) Long of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Lisa Paugh and Katherine Paugh of Warren; brother, Willard Mathews of Warren; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Paugh; daughter, Cindie; brother John Mathews; sister Elsie Mendenhall.
The funeral will be Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 2 pm at the Tod Avenue United Methodist Church where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Rev. Mark Vincent will officiate. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery on Monday, June 30, 2014.
