Alfred Joseph Davis

Alfred Joseph Davis, 81, of Denton, Texas and formerly of Niles, Ohio, passed away January 1, 2013 at Lake Forest Good Samaritan Healthcare Center. He was born on Palm Sunday, March 29, 1931, in Niles, the son of Sarah Ann Mannon Davis and Alfred John Davis.  He graduated from Niles McKinley High in the Class of 1949. He started with the old Erie Railroad as a Yard and Ticket Clerk, promoted to a Rate Clerk, then to a Chief Clerk in the Division Sales Office. He was later promoted to Division Manager of Special Equipment, and then to a Freight Agent.  He retired from Consolidated Rail Senior Management on January 31, 1990. Alfred was active in Aviation for more than 52 years as a Certified Flight and Ground Instructor, Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic, and Authorized Inspector Mechanic, and served as an Aviation Safety Counselor for the Cleveland FAA FSDO. He owned and constructed several aircrafts and gliders. He was very active as Presbyterian Elder, served on committees at Presbytery Levels, and was a member of Niles First Presbyterian Church where he was ordained as a Deacon and then as an Elder, serving many terms.  He was a member of Bagong Buhay Number 17, F&AM, Cavite City, P.I. Niles Chapter 223, R.A.M; Niles Council 130, R&SM; Past Commander, Prelate, and Recorder - Niles 79, Knights Templer; Youngstown Chapter of DeMolay; and served as Chapter "DAD" for Niles Order of The DeMolay, 1967 to 1970. Life Member of the Youngstown Traffic Club, Amateur Radio Operator with the call of WD8AVD, past President of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad Veterans Association, member of the Silver Wings Fraternity, and the Quiet Birdmen, Cleveland Hanger, member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and Professional Aircraft maintenance Association. Mr. Davis was with the 29th Engineering Battalion of the U.S. Army during the Korean Police Action as a Topographic Surveyor and Intelligence-Investigator. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Ann Eichinger Davis, whom he married May 24, 1952. A daughter, Deanna Davis Peters; son-in-law, John Peters; and a granddaughter, Kaitlynne Ruth; 1 niece; and 5 nephews. The Funeral was held at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, Texas on Friday, January 4, 2013.  Entombment Services will be Wesday, January 9, 2013 at 1:00 pm at Greenhaven Cemetery, Canfield. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 300 West Oak St., Denton, Texas 76201.
