Carmelia M. "Carmie" Steadman , 82, originally of Niles, Ohio, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, surrounded by her loving daughters and sons-in-law following a short illness. Carmie was a beacon of strength, grace, and unwavering love. She demonstrated this until the very end, and her passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her.
Born in Warren, Ohio on May 22, 1942, the daughter of Tony and Mary A. (Franco) Belcastro. Carmie became the cherished wife of Earl S. Steadman on June 1, 1963, and he preceded her in death on March 21, 2024. Together, they shared 60 years of marriage and built a life filled with love, laughter, and fun. Their bond serves as a beautiful example of enduring and unconditional love.
Carmie grew up in Niles, graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1960 and continued to live there most of her life with her husband Earl and family. She was a life-long member of St. Stephen Church in Niles, and worked for Second National Bank until she retired. In 2021, Carmie and Earl moved year round to Fort Myers, Florida, where they became a beloved part of the vibrant community at the Cinnamon Cove Condominium Complex. There, they enjoyed the warmth of the Florida sun, playing bocce, cards, and spending quality time with lots and lots of friends. Carmie’s fun nature and warm heart made her a well-loved member of the Cinnamon Cove family, and she will be deeply missed by all her Cinnamon Cove friends and life-long friends from back home. Carmie found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as attending mass, dancing with Earl, sitting by the pool, going to the casino, and eating, cooking and baking amazing foods, especially Italian. She also enjoyed watching Hallmark Christmas movies year round, and loved the Christmas season. Carmie’s greatest joy was her family.
She is survived by her four devoted daughters Lisa (Don) Effinger of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Gina (Jim) Coates of Girard, Ohio; Amy (Gary) Goodin of Westfield, Indiana; and Jaime (Matt) Mack of Pickerington, Ohio. Carmie’s pride and love for her children knew no bounds, and her family was the center of her world. She embodied a wonderful balance of guidance, support, empathy, strength, laughter, fun and love.
Carmie was also the proud grandmother of 15 grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. They are Dominique Effinger, Mitchell Effinger, James (Sylvia) Coates, Angelene (Dominic) Naples, Jacob (Bailey) Coates, Chloe Coates, Ryan Mack, Lainey Mack, Callie Mack, Connor Schweck, Katalina Schweck, Patrick (Lindsay) Goodin, Gregory (Maggie) Goodin, Kelly Goodin, and Julia Goodin. She was also blessed with one great-grandchild, Maria Coates, and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of two more great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Nicholas (Linda) Belcastro of Niles. Carmie was preceded in death by her husband Earl, her parents, Tony and Mary Belcastro, and her brother, Joseph Belcastro of Niles, Ohio.
A Mass of Christian Burial and celebration of Carmie’s life will be held at Saint Pope John XXIII - St. Stephen Church at 11:00 a.m. on February 8, 2025. Everyone please meet at church. Entombment will be in Niles City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Central Ohio (hospiceofcentralohio.org) in Carmie’s honor.
Carmie’s legacy of love, strength, and kindness will live on in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, and all those who were touched by her warmth, generosity, and love. May she rest in peace, reunited with her beloved Earl, and may their love continue to inspire and guide their family for generations to come.
