Charles E. Hogan

WARREN - Charles Edward Hogan, 78, passed away peacefully in the early morning of Wednesday December 3, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Youngstown on January 14, 1936 the son of Paul J. and Elizabeth Jane (Hubbard) Hogan Sr. Living in Niles most of his life, he was a 1954 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, studied at Georgetown University before graduating from John Carroll University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Social Science. He was commissioned into the United States Army Reserves in 1959, serving his country as an active reservist for 15 years before receiving an honorable discharge as a Captain in 1974. Mr. Hogan retired from Community Skilled Health Care Centre in Warren, where he served as Administrator and CEO from 1980 to 1996. He began his 20 year nursing career in 1976 when he joined Windsor House Incorporated, where he became licensed by the State of Ohio in Nursing Home Adminiistration. His early career began with 10 years at the Trumbull County Welfare Department, where he served as Director from 1965 to 1970, followed by his appointment to Executive Director of the United Way of Trumbull County from 1970 to 1976. Mr. Hogan was a member of the American College of Health Care Administrators, the Ohio Health Care Association, the Visiting Nurse Association Board of Directors, the Northeast Ohio Drug Abuse Council, the Trumbull County Social Services Advisory Committee, the Trumbull County Comminity Chest and the Warren Kiwanis Club, where he had the opportunity to help plan the first Annual Warren Kiwanis Turkey Trot. After retirement, Mr. Hogan enjoyed many years traveling to visit family and friends. Like his grandfather before him, he enjoyed being "Pop Hogan" to his six grandchildren. A golf enthusiast like his father, Mr. Hogan enjoyed numerous golf trips throughout his life, the highlight being his 1999 trip to Ireland. He was an inaugural member of the family's 26 year running Annual Hogan Cup. Mr. Hogan enjoyed listening to jazz music, not missing a chance to see live shows whenever he could; and taking fishing trips to Canada. He was an avid reader and never stopped rooting for the Cleveland Browns. Mr. Hogan will be deeply missed by his three daughters and their families, Nola Werren of North Canton, Christine (Richard) Tvaroch of Howland, Jane (Jim) Babb of Monte Sereno, California; six grandchildren, Elaine Werren, Maggie Werren, Alexander Tvaroch, Christopher Tvaroch, Mason Babb, James Glenn Babb; two brothers, Paul (Sandra) Hogan Jr. of Niles, Daniel T. (Gail) Hogan of Columbus; three sisters, Patricia Lobaugh of Naples, Florida, Sally (Nicholas) Roberts of Niles, Ruth Stabile of Naples, Florida; 19 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers in law, Paul L. Stabile and Lawrence E. Lobaugh. Calling Hours will be Sunday, December 7, 2014 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, December 8, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stephen Church. Rev. James Korda will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery. The family wishes to thank Hospice of the Valley for their support. The family also wishes to thank Mr. Hogan's caregiving team, who were second to none in providing him a safe and nurturing environment, and whose special care and assistance were appreciated by him every day. The family requests memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley or the United Way of Trumbull County.
