NILES - Dana J. Slick, 64, passed away at 11:52 pm on Saturday October 12, 2013 at the St. Joseph Health Center following a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Warren on March 23, 1949 the son of Harold and Marian (Fox) Slick and lived in this community most of his life. A 1967 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, he attended the DeVry Institute prior to enlisting the United States Marine Corp. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corp, he became a proud member of the Teamsters Local 377 and forever supported his brotherhood. For many years he was an independent owner and operator truck driver hauling steel for several local freight companies. For the past thirteen years he was a car hauler for Cassens Transport of Lordstown.
He had a "Heart of Gold" who cherished the time spent with his family and grandchildren and helping his neighbors. An avid chess player, he also enjoyed vegetable gardening, fishing and hunting. He was of the Protestant faith.
Dana is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife, Janet S. Rider whom he married on December 26, 1974; two sons, Dr. Eric (Dr. Angela) Slick of Boardman, Chad (Chantal) Slick of Baltimore, Maryland; four grandchildren, Ethan, Brandon, Cameron, Isabella.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and Harry Slick.
Calling Hours will be Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 5 to 8 pm at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. The funeral will be Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church, Niles where family and friends may call half hour prior to the service. Pastor Dave Burman Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
