NILES - Bishop George Earnest Johnson, 82, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, January 20, 2015 at his residence following a short illness. George was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on February 7, 1932 the son of Roy A. and Mima (Williams) Johnson and moved to this area many years ago.
He graduated from Portsmouth High School, A.C.E. Bible College and organized the Family Life Christian Academy at the Family Life Church. He was an United States Navy Veteran honorably serving in the Korean War.
George was the pastor of the Family Life Church for 34 years and was recently honored with the position of Bishop. He was a millwright at Packard Electric Co. for 13 years and retired in 1981 and was previously employed for 19 years at the Republic Steel Company Niles Plant.
Bishop Johnson was actively involved as the Presbyter for the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ and spent yearly vacations with his family attending many church conferences. He enjoyed traveling and gave five guided tours of the Holy Land. In his younger years, he was an baseball player and was an avid Cleveland Indian Fan.
His entire life was devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ, his church and his loving wife and family. He cherished the gatherings with his family and his church family.
Bishop Johnson is survived by his wife, Ezell (Brown) Johnson whom he married December 14, 1950; three daughters, Renee (Richard) Gelum of Warren, Sharmain Phillips of Omaha, Nebraska, Michelle (Roger) LaBar of Suffield; son, Jeffrey Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren Stephanie (Brian) Gifford of Dayton, Jason Phillips of Austin, Texas, Desiree (Jesse) Hardin of Youngstown, Nicholas (Rebecca) Singelis of Linden, Michigan, Matthew Singelis of Niles, Jordan Johnson and Cody Johnson both of Omaha; nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and five brothers.
Calling Hours will be Friday, January 23, 2015 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Family Life Church on Linden Avenue, Niles, and Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 9 to 10 a.m. The Funeral will follow at 10:00 am at the church. Senior Pastor Timothy Eric Gowens Sr. will officiate with other clergy participating. Burial will be in Kerr Cemetery with military honors.
