George Merlin Unger

NILES - George Merlin Unger, 73, passed away at 8:55 p.m. on Saturday December 16, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Brookville, Pennsylvania on May 6, 1944 the son of Charles J. and Alice I. (Vandervort) Unger Sr. He was a 1963 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and honorably served in the United States Navy. George retired from Packard Electric after working over 30 years in various positions including a tow motor operator. He was a volunteer fireman for the Hazen Fire Department, a member of the Brookville Fireman's Club where he helped with their Flea Market concessions and the Eagles Club. He was also a member of the Niles McKinley Masonic Lodge #794 and a member and Past Monarch of the Warren Ali Babba Grotto. He enjoyed watching westerns on television, four wheeling with his brothers and sharing time with his grandsons "back in the mountains." George is survived by two daughters, Christine (Jeffrey) Gilmour of Newton Falls, Kathleen (Scott) Braithwaite of West Valley City, Utah; son, Paul (Kim) Unger of Altoona, Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren, Robby, Justin, Amanda, Cody, Chandler, Collin, Hannah, Caiden; great grandson, Deklan; three brothers, Raymond (Cathy) Unger of Bristolville, Ronald (Maryann) Unger of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Norman (Ginger) Unger of Springbranch, Texas; sister, Doris Connell of Warren; sister in law, Phyllis Unger of Brandenton, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Unger Jr. and granddaughter, Jennah. Calling Hours will be Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. The Trumbull County Honor Guard Service, Masonic Service and Funeral will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Curtis Miller officiating. Burial will be on Friday at the Church of God Cemetery in Emerickville, Pennsylvania.
