Glenn Edward Griffiths , 84, passed away on Sunday July 7, 2024 at his home. Glenn was born on August 16, 1939 in Trumbull Memorial Hospital, the eldest child of Paul Hoyt and Genevieve Lucy (Beatty) Griffiths. He grew up on the Southside of Niles and graduated from Niles McKinley High School in 1957. He attended Newberry College in Newberry, South Carolina and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Youngstown State University. He continued his education at the Ohio School of Banking at Ohio University, the Graduate School of Banking at The University of Wisconsin and the IBAA Investment School at the Owen School of Business at Vanderbilt University.
Glenn joined the Dollar Savings Bank Company of Niles (later known as the Security Dollar Bank) in 1964 and held various offices, eventually becoming the President and CEO of the Bank in 1989. Under Glenn's administration, the bank grew from $75 million to $170 million in assets, including the development of a branch banking network; an enlarged main office; a separate operations center; and addition to the Girard branch which doubled the size of the bank's first branch. Glenn was active in state-wide community banking organizations, serving as a director and officer of the Community Bankers Association of Ohio (CBAO) from 1995 -1999, including being elected President of the CBAO in 2000. He was a director of the Independent State Bank of Ohio (ISBO), now called The Great Lakes Bankers Bank.
He was a Trustee and President of the William McKinley National Birthplace Memorial in Niles, and a member of the YSU Alumni Association. Glenn was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge, The Playhouse Square Center in Cleveland, the Trumbull Art Guild, the Niles Historical Society and the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber. He was a Red Cross blood donor. He was a member of the Niles Kiwanis Club serving a s President in 1972 and the Niles Jaycees serving as Treasurer from 1968 to 1970. Glenn participated in an eight week Rotary Group Study exchange in Austria in 1972. He was elected to the Niles McKinley Hall of Fame Class of 2005. He honorably served in the United States Army and the Air Force Reserves.
Glenn is survived by a son, Paul Griffiths of Niles; daughter, Alison Griffiths of New Springfield; granddaughter, Madeline (Matt) Roberts of Austintown; two great granddaughters, Juliet and Eva Roberts; brother, Charles (Lina) Griffiths of Charlotte, North Carolina; three nephews, Carlos (Amanda) Choren, Michael (Marla) Choren, Zachary (McKenzie) Griffiths.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years and four months, Michelle Mickelson Griffiths, Ph.D whom he married on October 7, 1961 and who passed away on February 7, 2021; and sister, Paula L. Griffiths who passed away on June 6, 2018.
A private family service was held at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home in Niles.
