John Henry Stephens

December 21, 1919 — February 11, 2014

NILES - John Henry Stephens, 94, died at 12:35 pm on Tuesday February 11, 2014 at the Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He was born in Commodore, Pennsylvania on December 21, 1919 the son of Albert F. and Mary R. (Sides) Stephens and moved to Ohio in 1956. A graduate of Pine Township High School, Heilwood, Pennsylvania, he was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. For many years he was a laborer in the Pennsylvania coal mines then worked for American Welding and retired in 1978 after working 15 years as a machinist at LTV Steel. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge, attended the New Hope United Methodist Church of Niles and was an active Mason. He served as a Master of the Mahoning Lodge #394, High Priest of the Niles Chapter #223 Royal Arch Masons, Illustrius Master of Niles Council #130 Royal and Select Masons, Past Commander of the Niles Commandry #79 Knights Templar and Past Patron of the Ida McKinley Chapter #229 Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of the Scottish Right Dalby of Youngstown 32nd Degree Mason and received the Knight of the York Cross of Honor for over 50 years of membership. John is survived by five children, John (Terri) Stephens of Liberty Center, Mary Wilbur of Frederick, Maryland, Charles (Barbara) Stephens of Bristolville, Sarah (Larry) Hoffman of Bristolville, Hope Thomas of Mineral Ridge; 12 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren and a brother, Greg Stephens of Florida. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Martha (Graham) Stephens whom he married on March 23, 1941 and who died on October 10, 2009; three sisters, June Good, Betty Davis, Helen Brown; three brothers, Glenn, Robert and William Stephens; two son in laws, Thomas Wilbur and Jay Thomas. Calling Hours will be Saturday, February 15, 2014 from 2 to 4 pm at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. The Funeral and Masonic Service will follow at 4 pm. Rev. Curtis Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Kerr Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley.
