Margaret Ellen Clay

Margaret "Maggie" Ellen Clay, 87, formerly of Niles, passed away on Tuesday morning September 6, 2022 at the Trumbull Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. She was born in Charlestown, Ohio on November 29, 1934 the daughter of Floyd and Audrey (Bradfield) Phillips.

Maggie graduated from Cortland High School in 1953 and worked as a telephone operator for Cortland Telephone Company and Ohio Lamp Company.  Actively involved in her children's school and extracurricular activities, she served as President of the Garfield Elementary PTA and as a poll election judge for many years. She chauffeured her kids to various sports and volunteer events, church and work. Maggie enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved helping her husband host many fish frys and fall weather wiener roasts for friends and family throughout the years. When her children were older, she worked for more than 24 years at Sears Parts and Repair in Niles. After her retirement, she continued to work as a poll judge and volunteered at SCOPE in Niles.

Maggie is survived by her children, Pamela (Daniel) Hedberg of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, Patricia Poarch of Lubbock, Texas; Glenn Clay of Warren, Russell (Joyce) Clay of Niles; grandchildren, Stephen (Ann) Hedberg of Rumson, New Jersey, Joshua (Nathalie) Hedberg of Fort Belvoir, Virginia, Rachel (Tim) Ries of Ocean Grove, New Jersey, Randi Alexandra Poarch of Lubbock, Texas, Thomas (Amanda) Clay, Tricia (Jeremy) Clay, Erin Clay; great grandchildren, Makayla Hedberg, Haley Ries, Morgan Ries, Hannah Hedberg, Audrey Hedberg, Emma Hedberg, Chloe Hedberg, Audrina Malone, Emelia Malone, Isabelle Malone and Blaire Clay. Also surviving are treasured sisters, Marjorie (Doug) King and Barbara (Dan) McCarthy, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband George Thomas Clay Jr. whom she married on October 29, 1956 and who died on February 22, 2014; beloved grandson, Bronson Poarch; beloved granddaughter, Kirsten Margaret Hedberg; beloved son-in-law, Randy Poarch; three sisters Myrtle Joseph, Gladys Allen, Eugenia Goss; five brothers, Arthur Phillips, Ralph Phillips, Raymond Phillips, Charles Phillips and Donald Phillips.

The funeral will be at noon on Friday September 9, 2022 at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home in Niles where family and friends may visit from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Newton Township.

The family wishes to thank the administration and staff at Country Club Rehabilitation Campus of Newton Falls where she resided in Assisted Care for four years and more recently the nursing home section of the campus.
