CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Moritz, 96, died peacefully Thursday morning September 22, 2016 at the Neville Center at Fresh Pond in Cambridge.
She was born in Niles, Ohio on September 30, 1919 the daughter of Michael and Angeline (LaPolla) DeJute and lived in Niles most of her life. She moved to Massachusetts in 2013.
She was a 1937 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and received her Bachelor and Master of Science in Education Degrees from Kent State University. For over 35 years she was a teacher at Niles City Schools and St. Stephen School where she retired in 1985.
Betty was a lifetime member of St. Stephen Church and throughout the years she was active in many of the church and school activities including the adult choir. She was also a member of the Niles Catholic Womens Club, the Executive Board of Niles Community Services, the Friends of the McKinley Memorial Library and Museum, the Warren Library Book Discussion Group and a charter member and past president of the Niles Historical Society. For many years she volunteered at the Niles Red Cross.
Betty is survived by two sons, Albert (Theresa) Moritz III of Toronto, Canada, Michael Craig (Kathy) Moritz of Lincoln, Massachusetts; four grandchildren, Blaise (Roseanne Carrara) Moritz, Amanda Moritz, Megan Moritz, Manu Moritz; and two great grandchildren, Tobias and Bearice Moritz.
She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Albert F. Moritz Jr. whom she married on June 17, 1946 and who died on August 22, 1973; daughter, Rosanne Moritz who died on November 24, 1979; grandson, Istvan Moritz who died June 2016; sister, Rose DeJute and two brothers, Anthony and Michael DeJute.
Calling Hours will be Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home where the St. Stephen Bereavement Ministry will have a 4:30 p.m. prayer service. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 26, 2016 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Stephen Church. Rev. James Korda will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
