Matthew James Dodgson Sr. , 79, lovingly know as Matt or MJ, passed away on Friday morning June 20, 2025 at his home surrounded by the family he cherished more than anything. He was born in West Leisenring, Pennsylvania on November 29, 1945 the son of Ralph and Josephine (Tresky) Dodgson Sr.
He was a 1963 graduate of Dunbar High School (Mules) where he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track. Matt made his lifelong home in Trumbull County, Ohio where he built a legacy of hard work, quiet strength and unconditional love. He spent over five decades in furniture sales and was proud to co-own Dodson Furniture in Niles with his brother Barry for 33 years. After the store closed, he continued to serve the community as a driver and dispatcher for Community Bus Services, retiring only when his health required it.
Matt was a man of simple joys and deep devotions. He found peace in gardening, joy in cheering for his Pittsburgh teams, and purpose in family traditions like trips to camp in West Virginia, woodworking, golfing, canning vegetables and gatherings for holidays and milestones. There was no game or recital too small for him to attend - he loved nothing more than watching his kids and grandkids shine.
Matthew James Dodgson Sr. was a man who always asked, "How is everybody?" - and he meant it. He remembered every detail, every birthday, every need. His quiet kindness and steady presence were constants in the lives of those lucky enough to know him. He was generous with his time, his wisdom and his love.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Cheri Garvin-Dodgson whom he married on November 12, 1991; his children, Matt (Shonda) Dodgson Jr., Tom (Tova) Dodgson, Lori (Jason) Smith, Audrey (Jacob) Swank, Vincent (Keara) Dodgson and step-daughter, Mallerie Day. He was the proud grandfather of Tom Jr., Justin, Leah, Lindsey, Hadley, Monroe, Corinn, Lennon and loving great- grandfather to many more. His legacy also lives on in his dear sisters-in-law, Jan Dodgson (Barry Dodgson), Joan Mongulla (Ralph Dodgson), Debbie Garvin, Amy (Bob) Harris, Lisa Garvin (Chris Garvin) along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Barry Dodgson, Ralph "Bud" Dodgson, brother-n-law Chris Garvin, aunt, Ann (Tresky) Schepis and his step-grandson, Lance DeFalco.
