Richard J. Pirigyi

Richard J. Pirigyi , 89, passed away peacefully on Friday May 24, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Niles, Ohio on September 23, 1934 the son of Julius M. and Julia (Brogley) Pirigyi.

He was a 1952 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and received a Bachelors Degree in Engineering in 1956 from Youngstown State University. He proudly served as a civil engineer in the United States Army. Richard worked for 40 years as a mechanical engineer at Schaefer Equipment and retired in 1999. He was a member of St. Stephen Church and was the past Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop # 33 for many years. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame sports and enjoyed fishing and bowling.

Richard is survived by his wife, Evelyn M. McCartney Pirigyi whom he married on February 12, 1972; three children, Bryan W. (Dominique) Pirigyi of Buffalo, New York, David B. (Lisa) Smathers of Niles, Karen E. Smathers-Marburger of Niles; six grandchildren, Nicole (Jason) Calhoun, Ashley (Brian) Kolar, Katie (Andrew) Staab, Emily (Cody) Sloan, Sophia J. Pirigyi, Ethan J. Pirigyi; eight great grandchildren and brother, Dale Pirigyi of Niles. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn DeChristofaro and Virginia Aulet.

Calling Hours will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday June 8, 2024 at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen Church. The Rev. John Madden will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
