Marguerite Helen Kovach, age 96, passed on with God on Thursday morning, July 27, 2023 at her residence. She was born on March 10, 1927 in Mineral Ridge, Ohio the daughter of James and Ida (Fonce) Carl and lived in this area all her life.
Marguerite was a 1945 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School. During her teenage years, she worked as a waitress cook at the old Risher's Dairy in Niles, and she enjoyed singing with the St. Mary (St. Stephen) Church choir of Mineral Ridge. She married her husband Paul Frank Kovach at Mineral Ridge St. Mary Church on April 3, 1948, and then resided in Niles.
Marguerite was employed as the payroll and shipping secretary with the former Niles Stanley Works Fabrication, secretary at the Niles Allied Metals Company, sales clerk at the former Niles Hickory Farms Food Market, kitchen managercook at the Fairhaven School of Trumbull County, and case secretary with the former downtown Niles State of Ohio Employment Agency. Most importantly, she was especially proud with her longtime employment service as a social caseworker with the Trumbull County Department of Jobs and Family Services where she retired in 1995. Marguerite also served as the office AFSCME Labor Local #458 chief steward
Marguerite was a member of Saint Stephen Catholic Church of Niles where she enjoyed participating toward various volunteer activities. Marguerite especially enjoyed singing with the Niles Saint Stephen Church choir and decorating the church for all the major holidays. She also enjoyed volunteer work at the former Niles Saint Stephen School cafeteria, former Jackson school fund-raiser fairs and volunteered with Niles McKinley School Band boosters in the 1970's. She also enjoyed watching the Niles High School band performing during their marching parades and football half-time show performances. She also volunteered delivering meals with the Niles Mobile Meals and volunteered at the Warren Saint Vincent DePaul food kitchen. She always enjoyed watching the old black and white classical movies. and enjoyed having fun during the Christmas, Easter and the trick-or-treat Halloween holidays. Marguerite enjoyed time with her friends and family members, especially her grandchildren. She took much pride cooking Italian and Slovak food dishes.
Marguerite is survived by two sons, Gregory Kovach of Niles, Paul Martin (Kathleen) Kovach of McDonald; grandson, Alexander (Lisa) Kovach of Chicago, Illinois; granddaughter, Gabrielle (Daniel) Lageson of Cleveland and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; late husband Paul Frank Kovach who died March 27, 2014; an infant daughter Mary Celeste Kovach who died February 20, 1951; seven brothers Tony Carl, James Carl, George Carl, Edward Carl, John Carl, Samuel Carr, Charles "Chink" Carr; four sisters, Josephine O'Connor, Rose (Wood) Trotter, Annie Borton, Mary Filomina.
Calling hours will be at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with bereavement prayers at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be in Saint Stephen Church on Thursday, August 3, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Steven J. Agostino as celebrant. Burial will be with her husband in Saint Stephen Cemetery. Material contributions may be made to Saint Stephen Church, 129 W. Park Ave., Niles, OH 44446
