NILES - G. Gay Krok, 94, passed away peacefully at 6:33pm on Friday, July 23, 2010 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Niles, Ohio on September 11, 1915 to Joseph and Theresa (Pantesz) Krok Sr and lived here all his life.
Gay was a 1934 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, a Navy veteran of World War II serving four years with the Seabees in North Africa. He was the owner of Gay's Printing Service for 31 years and retired in 1980. Following retirement he became a realtor for 20 years with the Altobelli Real Estate Company.
Gay was a very active community minded individual. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for 63 years, served as scoutmaster, commissioner, and committee member and chairman for Scout Troop #33 of Saint Stephen's Church, he received the Eagle Scout award, Silver Beaver Award and the Saint George Award. A longstanding fourth degree member of the Niles Knights of Columbus #1681, serving as a past Grand Knight, District Deputy and honored in 1963 as Man of the Year, a member of the William McKinley post #106 of the American Legion and served as a past commander and adjutant and honored in 1976 as their Man of the Year, a member of the Amvets and honored in 1977 in appreciation for outstanding community service. In 1979 he received the Carmen DeChristofaro Citizen of the Year Award from the Niles Area Jaycees. In 2006 he received the Valley Legacy award. He was a member and past president of the Niles Chapter of AARP, a Trumbull County Chapter Red Cross blood mobile volunteer and driver for the Niles branch, enjoyed collecting antique books, a member of Saint Stephen's Church, past president of the former Home and School association and a church usher for 30 years and a past president of the Ushers Club.
Gay is survived by his wife the former Margaret Pirigyi whom he married March 30, 1940, a daughter, Judee Krok of Niles, and a son, Richard (Rochelle Hawkes) Krok of Howland, Special niece, Joyce Crank of Niles, three grandsons, Christopher (Jennifer) Ahern, Randall Krok and Travis Krok, two great-grandchildren, Makenna and Chase Ahern, close friend, Jack Calhoun one brother, Edward (Doloris) Krok of Mineral Ridge.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers Joseph Jr., Louis, David and John.
Calling Hours will be Monday, July 26, 2010 from 4 to 7 pm at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, Niles. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Stephen's Church on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 10:00am with the Rev. Thomas Kraszewski officiating. Burial will be in Saint Stephen's Cemetery with military honors by the Trumbull County Veterans Honor Guard.
