MINERAL RIDGE – Howard E. VanHorn, 70, of Mineral Ridge, passed away at 3:29 pm on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Youngstown following an extended illness.

He was born on December 20, 1939 in Home, Pennsylvania the son of the late Floyd and Katherine (Juart) VanHorn. 

He retired in 1985 after working 35 years as a crane man for WCI Steel, he also worked at LTV Steel and Copperweld.  He was the owner of VanHorn Excavating.  Howard enjoyed tending to wildlife, antiques and especially cherished the time spent with his grandchildren.

Howard is survived by his wife of 50 years Patty J. (Heitman) VanHorn whom he married on June 9, 1960; three sons, Wayne (Patricia) VanHorn Sr. of Liberty, Allen VanHorn of Mineral Ridge, Michael (Deana) VanHorn Sr. of Mineral Ridge; six grandsons, Wayne Jr., Bryan, Patrick, Michael Jr., Mason, Maddax; brother, James (Silvia) VanHorn of N. Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Kristopher VanHorn; and two brothers, Charles and Gary.

Calling Hours will be Friday, September 3, 2010 from 5 to 8 pm at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home.  The Funeral will Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 11:00am at the funeral home.  Rev. Nicholas Furrie will officiate.  Burial will be at Kerr Cemetery.

    I'm glad I stopped to visit when Howard was out sitting under the trees with Pat and Family and Friends. It's a good memory of him and I will always remember that time even though I'm far away.

    I was very saddened to here about Mr. Van Horn's passing. It has been a long time since I saw him, but I fondly remember hanging out on the back porch of the house, and Mr. Van Horn would be sitting in his favorite spot and his favorite chair messing with us kids.
